Sony F35 CineAlta
Film-style digital cinematography camera with super 35mm-sized imager maximizes your creative possibilities
In 2000, Sony revealed its first CineAlta™ camcorder, the HDW-F900, which introduced a new and innovative concept of recording 24-frame video onto a digital cassette for digital cinema and prime program production. Since then, Sony has been continuously enhancing the CineAlta lineup and the functionalities of each product by carefully listening to feedback from the production community. In 2006, the F23 – Sony’s digital cinematography camera – was debuted, and again introduced a new level of creative performance.
Sony now introduces the new F35 digital cinematography camera, which offers a new Super 35mm-sized CCD sensor and PL lens mount for cinematographers who have perennial passion for 35mm film lenses. The F35’s newly developed Super 35mm-sized CCD sensor provides breathtaking picture quality, an extensive range of depth-of-field controls, extended dynamic range compared to the F23, and F23-equivalent wide color gamut. The PL lens mount of the F35 allows flexible use of the vast majority of 35mm cinema lenses, which greatly expands creative possibilities for users.
The F35 is designed with the same platform as the F23, providing similar capabilities such as an SR Motion feature and over- and under-crank capture, plus an ergonomic design that allows direct docking with Sony’s SRW-1 portable HDCAM-SR™ recorder. It’s also possible to use an F23 and the new F35 in combination, for even more creative freedom.
Bringing together the advantages of digital technology with film-style operability, the F35 expands the “production toolsets” available for high-end digital cinema and prime program productions both today and into the future.
State-of-the-art Super 35mm-sized CCD
The F35 camera is equipped with a newly developed Super 35mm-sized CCD sensor that offers a full resolution of 1920 x 1080 at a picture rate of up to 50 progressive frames per second. The result is exceptional image quality, a wide dynamic range, and extremely flexible depth-of-field control. The CCD has RGB stripes without color filter arrays, and color values are never “interpolated” from neighboring pixels.
PL Lens Mount
The F35 camera employs a PL lens mount which is standard for film cameras, allowing a number of zoom and prime lenses for 35mm film cameras to be used. This greatly broadens the choice of lenses for wider spectrum of creative expression.
Compatibility With Film Camera Accessories
Designed to be compatible with a variety of ARRI™ film camera accessories, the F35 accommodates film camera bridge plates, follow focus units, lens focus/zoom/iris servo controls, and more – without modification to the camera.
Dockable to SRW-1 HDCAM-SR Portable Recorder
The F35 camera docks to the companion SRW-1 HDCAM-SR recorder to form a self-contained, cable-free, and highly portable combination. This provides a variable frame rate recording capability of “over-cranking” and “under-cranking”, with variable frame rates from 1 frame per second (fps) to 50 fps in one-frame increments. RGB 4:4:4 recording is also possible with this combination to provide extremely high picture quality.
